Bentley $222.91 adminster     Larry Wood, Robert Wood's son has done some research and thinks this name should be Andrew Jackson Wood.  Andrew Jackson Wood Born 1820 in Madison County, KY Married Nov 7, 1843 in Madison County, KY Died Approx 1857 in Owen County, KY        Following Information by Becky Rice     The information on Andrew Jackson Wood dying in Henry County MO is from narrative information my Aunt Leona Wood Smith put together in the early 1960's. I am going to assume her sources are just handed down family word-of-mouth. My Aunt Leona had started working on the family genealogy back in the early 1960's. What she wrote states that when John E. Wood was 12 years old, Andrew Jackson Wood sold his property in Owen County to move to Kansas. According to Leona's notes, the family stopped in Henry County MO to await the outcome of events in KS (the fighting as to whether the state would be free or a slave state - the "Border Wars" I think). There, A.J. Wood took typhoid fever and died. Ann Bentley Wood and children are said to have overwintered with A.J.'s brother, John G. Wood,  in Tazewell Co. IL before returning to Henderson County.

Wood, Sr. was born in Madison County, Kentucky near Boonesboro in 1844,     When he was one year old his father bought a farm in Owen County and moved there.  He lived there until he was 12 years old, then his father sold the farm to move to Kansas.  They were fighting in Kansas as to whither the state would be free or slave so John E. father Andrew Jackson Wood & his mother Anne Katherine Bentley Wood stopped to await a turn of events in Henry County.  The father took typhoid fever and died.  He was buried in a cemery in Henry County, MO.  They came back to Tazwell Co., ILL & wintered there with one o0f his father's brother then came back to KY. & settled in 1857 at the farm in Henderson Co near Cairo on what is known as the Lockett farm.     John E. Wood enlisted in the Army for the Civil War Aug 1862.  He was in the army 13 months. Samantha lived with my grandparents in Providence. She went to live with them when “Breck” died.  That was before I was born.  When I was born, I spent a lot of time with them. Grandma Wood was blind by that time, and her job was to entertain me. It is sometimes strange what a child will remember. I remember that she wore a lot of petticoats. Most of them were flannel, but there was one white one trimmed in lace that she wore on top of the others.  The house was heated only by a couple of fireplaces,  and I think the petticoats were a way to keep warm. I know I would watch in amazement as she would put them on. She would sit for hours in the living room in a rocking chair.  I believe my oldest son still has that chair.  I wish I could remember the tales she told me, but most have disappeared with my advancing years.

 

 

Grandma was fascinated with “mad dog” (rabies) stories. That seemed to be a fear of her younger years. She would tell about people being bitten by a “mad” (rabid) dog. One I remember was about a woman who encountered a mad dog. She was not bitten, but the dog caught her skirt in its teeth and ripped it. As Grandma told it, the woman mended her dress with needle and thread, biting off the thread when she was finished. The end of the story was that she got rabies from the saliva the dog had left on her dress! Quite a story!

 

I remember Mother saying that Grandma went to church every Sunday, but not before she cooked up a large meal.  Mother said, “She would not leave church until she had invited everyone there to go home with her for dinner, and half of them went!” Of course that was when she still lived on the farm.  Virgil said that everyone in the community (including their family) called them “Aunt Samantha” and "Uncle Breck."

 

As I said, she was blind. Every so often, Papa (Roscoe) would write letters for her to send to her family. She could get around in the house by herself. She had a certain path she would take from the living room and/or the kitchen to her bedroom. My younger cousin, Mary Margaret Wood, delighted in offering to “lead”  her to her room. Mary would then take a path through another bedroom and completely confuse Grandma.

Samantha lived with Richard Tapp until she married (Richard was her uncle).

Notes for John William Wood:

Was hit in the head with a rafter while helping build a house.  Some believe that this may have contibuted to his "light strokes" which started around 1924. He had lost his first wife in 1919 and had remarried.  This was about the time that Aunt Sue was born.  In 1939, at age 59 he had a major stroke.  He was found crawling in the mine.  In 1941 he had a "bad stroke", Dr. Davinport reported that Grandpa Wood's blood pressure was " the highest that he had ever checked".     Census 1910 Hopkins Co., KY Wood John W.     H  29 KY Lillie A.   W  25 KY Edna E.   D  06 KY Verna E.   S  05 KY Samuel V.  S  03 KY     John Wood, 70, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday at his home in Providence. Was hit in the head with a rafter while helping build a house.  Some believe that this may have contibuted to his "light strokes" which started around 1924. Laddie Pride officiated, with burial in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.     She died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.     She was a 72-year member of Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Providence. She was also an artist, seamtress,cook and musician.     Survivors include three daughters, Judy Garrett of Kuttawa, Jane Virgin of Providence, and Nelda Platz of Watertown, WI; three sons, Johnnie Wayne Brown of Manchester, TN, Doug Brown of Hopkinsville, and Randy Brown of Henderson; a brother, Virgil Wood of Providence; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.     Melton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangments.     SS Death Index Name:   Inez W. Dr. C.B. Wood, paleontologist and professor of natural science for 38 years

Dr. Craig Breckinridge “C.B.” Wood, professor emeritus of natural science in the Department of Biology at Providence College and a specialist in vertebrate paleontology, died Dec. 25, 2018, in Virginia, where he resided.

Dr. Wood taught at PC for 38 years, beginning with a School of Continuing Education course in introductory geology in the summer of 1974 and continuing until his retirement in July 2012. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1979, associate professor in 1993, and professor in 2001. He served as department chair from 2006-2008.

 

Dr. Craig Breckinridge Wood, professor of natural science for 38 years

Dr. Wood held a Ph.D. and a master of arts degree in geology from Harvard University, a master of science degree in geology from the University of Wyoming, and a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He also studied at Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Wood’s research specialties included vertebrate paleontology, the evolution of early mammals, and the distribution of Mesozoic vertebrates in Africa, Asia, and North America, centering on field work in Ethiopia, Korea, and northeastern China. He was a research associate at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard and a member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, which will honor him at its annual conference in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in October.

In 1976, Dr. Wood was part of a team led by Jon E. Kalb that discovered the nearly whole, 600,000-year-old human skull later referred to as the Bodo cranium in Bodo D’ar in the Afar Desert, Hararghe Province. The skull, from an extinct hominin species, is in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.

A report of the discovery was published in the British scientific journal Nature. It also was described in Kalb’s book, Adventures in the Bone Trade: The Race to Discover Human Ancestors in Ethiopia’s Afar Depression, published in 2000.

“This experience was foundational for me, and over the years has contributed much to my courses in human and general biological evolution,” Dr. Wood wrote at the time of his retirement. “Interrupted by wars and revolution, some of us finally returned to Ethiopia in the 1990s to search in older rocks for Mesozoic fossils; our finds included dinosaur remains and the first Ethiopian dinosaur-age mammal specimen reported to science.”

In 1999, Dr. Wood was one of four researchers hunting dinosaur fossils in Ethiopia featured on an hour-long episode of The Learning Channel. The program followed the professors through arduous desert terrain and back to a museum laboratory to identify their finds.

Dr. Wood’s research in Ethiopia continues today under the care of his colleague, Dr. Mark Goodwin, professor emeritus at the University of California Museum of Paleontology.

From 1978-1987, Dr. Wood led student field researchers and fellow faculty members on six summer expeditions to the San Juan Basin in northwestern New Mexico to search for Paleocene fossils. The group rented passenger vans and camped as they traveled. On one trip they were accompanied by two Dominican priests, Rev. Thomas L. Fallon, O.P. ’41 & ’61Hon. and Rev. Charles V. Reichart, O.P. ’32 & ’58Hon.

During the 1981-82 academic year, Dr. Wood was granted a leave of absence from the College to participate in a University of Maryland program teaching biology and geology on U.S. military bases in Korea and Japan. While in Korea, he met and married his wife, Sung He Lee Wood.

Dr. Wood’s search for dinosaur-age mammals led to collaborative research between PC and Jilin University in Changchun, northeastern China. Colleagues from Jilin visited PC in 2002, and during the following summer, Dr. Wood visited Jilin with three PC students. He spent a sabbatical semester at Jilin in the fall of 2003 and was appointed honorary guest professor. In 2007, Dr. Wood attended a three-week intensive language course at Jilin with Rev. Mark Nowel, O.P., dean of undergraduate and graduate studies, five PC students, and two students from the University of Richmond, including Dr. Wood’s daughter. Their studies were followed by a tour of Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing.

Through Operation Wallacea, a conservation research organization based in England, Dr. Wood served as senior mammal specialist in Cusuco National Park in Honduras for seven weeks in 2008. He was asked to determine whether there was a new, undescribed species of mouse in the park. He collected skeletal remains and samples that were brought to PC so their DNA could be extracted and tested by Dr. Elisabeth Arévalo, associate professor of biology, and eight biology students.

“We found no evidence from our samples to support a new species, but all of us learned many new things,” Dr. Wood wrote. “In summer of 2009, two of the students and I returned to Honduras for three weeks of follow-up work. We were caught up briefly in a small-scale revolution that took place at the end of our stay, but happily we suffered no ill effects.”

One of Dr. Wood’s lasting contributions to PC’s campus is the Dawn Redwood, a kind of sequoia, now part of the bioswale near the Science Complex. Dr. Wood encountered the Dawn Redwood through specimens at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, where the tree was grown for the first time in the United States.

Dr. Wood was born in Washington, D.C., raised in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and left home for college at age 16.

“His mentorship of students, truly his legacy, came from a deep sense of compassion and sensitivity related to his own struggle,” said his daughter, Virginia Lee Wood.

Dr. Charles R. Toth, chair of the biology department, said Dr. Wood’s passion for working with undergraduates made him an enjoyable colleague.

“Whether it was in a freshmen biology lab, or in a forest in Honduras, or a fossil site in China, C.B. always put the students first and foremost for their training and experiences,” Toth said. “C.B. was a prominent supporter of the natural sciences and interdisciplinary programs at the College as well. Our new environmental biology major is a legacy to his efforts in supporting these programs.”

In his retirement, Dr. Wood resided in Wake, Va. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and two additional children, William Virgil Wood and Violet Bayland Wood. The funeral was private.

Dr. C.B. Wood, paleontologist and professor of natural science for 38 years

Dr. Craig Breckinridge “C.B.” Wood, professor emeritus of natural science in the Department of Biology at Providence College and a specialist in vertebrate paleontology, died Dec. 25, 2018, in Virginia, where he resided.

Dr. Wood taught at PC for 38 years, beginning with a School of Continuing Education course in introductory geology in the summer of 1974 and continuing until his retirement in July 2012. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1979, associate professor in 1993, and professor in 2001. He served as department chair from 2006-2008.

Dr. Wood held a Ph.D. and a master of arts degree in geology from Harvard University, a master of science degree in geology from the University of Wyoming, and a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He also studied at Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Wood’s research specialties included vertebrate paleontology, the evolution of early mammals, and the distribution of Mesozoic vertebrates in Africa, Asia, and North America, centering on field work in Ethiopia, Korea, and northeastern China. He was a research associate at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard and a member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, which will honor him at its annual conference in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in October.

In 1976, Dr. Wood was part of a team led by Jon E. Kalb that discovered the nearly whole, 600,000-year-old human skull later referred to as the Bodo cranium in Bodo D’ar in the Afar Desert, Hararghe Province. The skull, from an extinct hominin species, is in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.

A report of the discovery was published in the British scientific journal Nature. It also was described in Kalb’s book, Adventures in the Bone Trade: The Race to Discover Human Ancestors in Ethiopia’s Afar Depression, published in 2000.

“This experience was foundational for me, and over the years has contributed much to my courses in human and general biological evolution,” Dr. Wood wrote at the time of his retirement. “Interrupted by wars and revolution, some of us finally returned to Ethiopia in the 1990s to search in older rocks for Mesozoic fossils; our finds included dinosaur remains and the first Ethiopian dinosaur-age mammal specimen reported to science.”

In 1999, Dr. Wood was one of four researchers hunting dinosaur fossils in Ethiopia featured on an hour-long episode of The Learning Channel. The program followed the professors through arduous desert terrain and back to a museum laboratory to identify their finds.

Dr. Wood’s research in Ethiopia continues today under the care of his colleague, Dr. Mark Goodwin, professor emeritus at the University of California Museum of Paleontology.

From 1978-1987, Dr. Wood led student field researchers and fellow faculty members on six summer expeditions to the San Juan Basin in northwestern New Mexico to search for Paleocene fossils. The group rented passenger vans and camped as they traveled. On one trip they were accompanied by two Dominican priests, Rev. Thomas L. Fallon, O.P. ’41 & ’61Hon. and Rev. Charles V. Reichart, O.P. ’32 & ’58Hon.

During the 1981-82 academic year, Dr. Wood was granted a leave of absence from the College to participate in a University of Maryland program teaching biology and geology on U.S. military bases in Korea and Japan. While in Korea, he met and married his wife, Sung He Lee Wood.

Colleagues from Jilin visited PC in 2002, and during the following summer, Dr. Wood visited Jilin with three PC students. He spent a sabbatical semester at Jilin in the fall of 2003 and was appointed honorary guest professor. In 2007, Dr. Wood attended a three-week intensive language course at Jilin with Rev. Mark Nowel, O.P., dean of undergraduate and graduate studies, five PC students, and two students from the University of Richmond, including Dr. Wood’s daughter. Their studies were followed by a tour of Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing.

2006-07 CCHS class president killed in morning wreck The 2006-2007 class president of Coffee County Central High School died in an automobile accident Tuesday morning. Jeffery A. Brown of Manchester was killed and Michael F. Anderson of Tullahoma was injured on State Highway 55 in Moore County just before Motlow State Community College. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 1990 GMC Sonoma Pickup truck driven by Anderson was attempting to pass a third vehicle in extremely heavy rain and ran head-on into Brown's 1994 Nissan XE sedan. No citations have been issued at th is time. Brown was the grandson of former Manchester Mayor Johnnie Brown. His brother, Kevin, is a senior at Coffee County Central High School and is the kicker for the football team. TSI will have further information as it becomes available. No funeral arrangements have been announced at this time.     Jeffrey Allen Brown October 31, 1988 - September 11, 2007     Funeral services for Jeffrey A. Brown, age 18 of Manchester will be conducted at 10am, Friday, September 14 at the First United Methodist Church in Manchester with David Adams, Jay Archer and Bill Mulroy officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be from 3pm until 9pm, Thursday at Manchester Funeral Home. Jeff passed away Tuesday at Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Jeff was born in Winchester, Tennessee on October 31, 1988, the son of David Earl Brown and Edwina Marie Liles Pate. He was a 2007 graduate of Coffee County Central High School where he was the President of his senior class. Jeff was also active in the Youth Group at the First United Methodist Church in Manchester and was a member of the Lynchburg First United Methodist Church. He was majoring in Music at Motlow State Community College where he attended on a music scholarship. Jeffrey was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Edwin Liles.
