ALEXANDER GRAY9 BROWN (Mary Morrison8 Cummins, Mary Morrison7 Gray, Robert McDonnell6 Gray, Robert McDonnell5 Gray, John4 Gray, John3 Gray Sr., Thomas Riichard2 Gray, Richard1 Gray)137-141 was born on 03 Jun 1836 in Hillsborough, Orange Co., N. C. (12 miles north of)141. He died on 09 Mar 1928 in Webster Co., KY (Age: 91138, 141). He married (1) SUSAN ELIZABETH DUNCAN, daughter of Bill Duncan, on 16 Aug 1860 in Henderson Co, KY138, 142. She was born about 1841. She died in 1861 in Kentucky142. He married (2) ROSEANAH JANE HICKS, daughter of James Jones Hicks and Ann "Anna" Peed, on 26 Sep 1862 in Webster Co., KY138. She was born on 22 May 1844 in Person Co. , NC. She died on 06 Jun 1897 in Webster Co., KY (TB). Notes for Alexander Gray Brown: Came to Ky as a boy in 1850 from N. C. Lived with his brother Robert until he was 25 years old. Buried NEAR BAKER SCHOOL HOUSE CLOSE TO Dixon, KY. He wanted to serve in the Southern Army but there were no guns for him. He ran "salt" wagon from the Illinois line through Kentucky for the South desperately needed salt. His route was in an area called the "strip", which was populated by southern sympathizers. As told by Aunt Lennie (Brown) Martell Some Notes on Grandpa's Life: Alexander Gray Brown My father died in the fall before I came to Kentucky with my bother, mother and sister. My father's name was William Brown. I was born twelve miles from Hillsboro, Orange Co., North Carolina. June 3, 1836. I came to Kentucky in the fall of 1850 in company with mother, Mary Morrison Cummings Brown, and sister Margaret Jane Brown, who afterward married Chester Dossett who came out here at the same time, and brother Robert Brown who was older than I. Brother John came with us to Tennessee, and stayed there until the next fall, then came to Poole, Kentucky where he located first. Brother Dave Brown came one year before I did, and married Mary Thornsberrie- Russell's daughter, the next year after I came. Bill Dossett, Bill Garrett, Tom Freeland, Bill Hutchinson, Cester Dossett and Margery Hopkins and 6 negro slaves; Nathan Edd, Ellen, Nathan's wife, Mariah Nathan's sister: Juleitt, a little girl; and old Aunt Nancy who had been in the family of Brown since before my father was born. Us children called her mamma, and she would fight for us if she though one tried to run over us. Bob Brown married Macy Elizabeth Leathers in North Carolina and his son James Lipacomb Durham Brown learned to walk on the way out here. I was 14 yearsd old when we emigrated to Kentucky. I lived near Mudtown, about 6 or 7 miles from Poole. White Lick Creek emptied into Highland Creek about a mile above Mudtown. I lived between Poole and Mudtown 6 years, then we went to McLean Co. Worked for Bill Halbrooks and Bau MCFarland, came back to Petersburg and cast my first vote for Buchanan- lived at brother Bobs till I married when I was 25 years old. I married Bill Duncan's daughter, Susan Elizabeth who died in less than a year. The in a little over a year, I married - J. J. Hicks (James Jones Hicks) daughter, Roseanah Hicks. We lived near Jess Anderson Tappa 4 years, then moved within a mile of Jonestand where Bob Gupson lived - stayed there 4 or 5 years then moved near Clay near where Marshall Clark lives. Stayed 1 year, then moved to Hopkins Co., stayed 1 year - then moved 2 or 3 miles of Poole. Stayed 1 year there - then moved to Green Tolley School District, afterward called Baker - when the school house was built in a different place. These Notes were given to Vida Asher by Grandpa himself. ------- "Alexander. He was a big tall slender man. He was't big, but he was tall and he would drive a buggy down in there and stay, I don't know how long he would stay, I guess a week and I guess at Mr. Brown's longer than that. And he drove a buggy down there one time and the colored people, white, too, this happen to be a colored one. They stole his buggy wheels off from his buggy and Everitt Givens knew a little something about it, I don't know how he knowed about it, he just knowed that type, and he told them, they better get them wheels back on that buggy and they got the wheels back. He'd be stranded down there without a way to get back. He lived with Mr. Dave Brown up there in Dixon." Source: Pioneers, Preachers, and Pretty Plain People by Shirley Brown Mather who recored it from her grandmother Ola Gibson who married Claude Brown. After settling down in the Baker School District, the couple built a "homeplace" and remained there until Roseanah died on June 6, 1897 from some sort of epidemic. After which his son Robert Lee Brown loaded this family in an ox drawn wagon and emigrated to Arkansas. Alexander continued living on the "homeplace" with his son James Valladigham "Ham" Brown and his family until the "homeplace" was sold. Then he lived with his son Dave Brown until his death March 9, 1929.
