JOHN C. GIVENS was born in Hopkins County, Ky., June 17, 1828, and is the fourth of ten children born to James K. and Elizabeth (Christian) Givens, the former a native of Virginia, the latter of Kentucky, of Irish and English descent respectively. James E Givens, when about eighteen years old, in 1813, came with his parents to Hopkins County, Ky., where his father, Thomas Givens, bought military lands and improved a farm. James K. bought wild land near the old homestead, where be improved the farm upon which he resided until his death, in 1855. For the last twenty years of his life he was almost entirely helpless, being affected all that time by rheumatism. He and his wife were from early life members of the Baptist Church. John C. in 1850 went to California, by the overland route, and was successfully engaged in mining and teaming there for nearly three years. He then returned to Kentucky and bought a farm near Nebo, Hopkins County, where he has since been engaged in farmin! g. He was married November 24, 1854, to Miss Artemisia Barnhill, a native of Bertie County, N. C. Seven children have blessed their union, four of whom - two sons and two daughters - are living. Notes for LILLIAN FRANCES TAPP: Mrs. Lillian Frances GIVENS, 72, former Providence resident, died at 5 p.m. Saturday in Owensboro following a long illness. She was the widow of the late James B. Givens, who died in 1937. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. S.C. PERKINS, of Owensboro, and Mrs. H.E. CATES, of Nebo; a son, James C. Givens, Bowling Green; a half-sister, Mrs. J.D. SMITH, Sturgis; half-brother Archie TAPP, Phoenix, Ariz.; eighteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A son, Capt. John M. Givens, was killed in action in World War II. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Tapp Funeral Home in Providence, with the Rev. L.M. WINSTEAD, of Owensboro, officiating. Pallbearers were Arch BAMBERGER, Ed ACKERS, J.D. TYNON, and Charles PERKINS, of Owensboro, Oscar CORBIN, jr., and John Corbin, Providence. Burial was in Lakeview cemetery. Providence Journal-Enterprise, Thursday, January 6, 1949. Compiler's note: In Lakeview Cemetery in Providence Lillian F. Givens, Mar. 3, 1876-Jan. 1, 1949 is buried next to James B. Givens, Mar. 15, 1859-Dec. 22, 1937.

Notes for JOHN MARTIN GIVENS: Mrs. James B. Givens. received word Tuesday that her son, Capt. John Martin Givens, 30, previously reported missing since July 26, has been reported as having been killed in action on that date. The message was sent by the War Department to his wife who lives in Russellville. Capt. Givens, youngest of Mrs. Givens' children, was serving in Italy where he had been since June. He went to Italy from North Africa where he had been stationed for a short time. The report of his being missing reached his family on Aug. 18. Surviving besides his wife and his mother are two children, Mary Lucy and John Martin Givens, jr., of Russellville; a brother, Major James Givens, Ft. Benning, Ga.; and two sisters, Mrs. Scora Perkins, Henderson, and Mrs. Hazel Cates, Nebo. July 26, 1944.
